So he sought permission.

Daniel 1:8, But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought permission from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself.

Daniel wanted to be faithful to God, and he showed his faithfulness by asking permission of the commander to hold to his beliefs. We see that this now had a purpose beyond that of keeping his diet, for God would be glorified in what unfolded. For the captives from Israel were seen to prosper even in what their captors perceived as an inferior diet. And the Lord did not stop there, but blessed them and gave them additional knowledge, even to the interpretation of dreams. Had Daniel not approached his captor in humility, would this have been possible?

Let us do everything in Your humility, that all that we do may give glory to Your Name, O Lord.
