The Vineyard of the Lord

Isaiah 5:7, For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah His delightful plant. Thus He looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, a cry of distress.

We see a picture of our own nation, as a vineyard that has had every possible preparation, every possible attention to produce fruit in keeping with justice and righteousness. Like Israel, when the Lord looks at us expecting good grapes, does He see “worthless ones?” Is it the prayers of the righteous or the bloodshed and cries of distress of the helpless that the Lord is hearing? Might we not be a vineyard headed for ruin?

We thank You for Your great mercy, for sparing our nation; we long for justice and the righteousness that protects the helpless in true freedom.
