The uncertainty of riches.
1 Timothy 6:17-19, As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
Paul isn’t into asceticism. One of the most misquoted passages precedes this regarding money: “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” He encourages those of us who are so blessed to recognize our role as wise stewards over what he has entrusted to us. It’s wonderful to give to the Lord’s work in proportion to how we have received, and we should make sure that we are sowing that tithe into good soil. The real question is how well do I do with what is left? Am I rich in good works not only with my money, but with my time, attitude, strangers, co-workers, friends and family? People say that “you can’t take it with you,” which is true in the material sense: Paul shows us how to do what Jesus commands: to lay up treasure in heaven, “for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
We are so blessed in so many ways; guide us in being good stewards with all that you give us, O Lord!
