He wept over it.

Luke 19:41-42, And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.

In the midst of his triumphal entry with shouts of “Hosanna!” resounding, Jesus sees the city of Jerusalem and weeps with deep compassion as he did hearing those mourning for Lazarus. His great compassion is for those who were “sealed up in unbelief,” indeed who would soon bring the shout to end his life: “Crucify him!” As the prophet sees him: “He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.” He went to the cross “despising the shame” that he might offer eternal life to all who believe and obey him: “the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Do we weep over those who do not know him, asking for a miracle of divine grace to open their eyes?

Give us the same compassion for those who do not know you, that you may open their eyes by your amazing grace!
