Treasure in heaven.

Mark 10:21-22, And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

This rich young ruler came to Jesus, convinced of his own righteousness yet feeling a lack of confidence about inheriting eternal life. Jesus focuses on the key area for this young man, for he was possessed by his possessions. In our own culture, we are blessed with much disposable wealth; do we hold the stuff of this earth lightly? Do we consider our role as stewards of the blessings that we have? We may give a tithe, ten percent, and that’s good; how well do we steward the other ninety percent? Jesus said “for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Are we laying up treasure in heaven?

Show us how to hold the stuff of this earth as good stewards in your name, O Lord!
