They did not listen.

Jeremiah 17:22-23, "And you shall not bring a load out of your houses on the Sabbath day nor do any work, but keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your forefathers. Yet they did not listen or incline their ears, but stiffened their necks in order not to listen or take correction."

It seems strange that this would be the focal point of disobedience, for who among us today doesn’t appreciate a day with no work? It speaks to one of the fundamental natures of sin, that is disobedience. Even when the promise was that obedience would mean that the throne of David would be retained, that was not enough. And even with the threat of the burning of the gates, that was not enough either. The disease of sin is pervasive; we might think that we could have done better, but could we?

We need Your strength, for even though the power of sin is great, You have overcome it. Let us not stiffen our necks, but be willing to take correction.
