In my heart it becomes like a burning fire.

Jeremiah 20:8-9, I proclaim violence and destruction, because for me the word of the LORD has resulted in reproach and derision all day long. But if I say, "I will not remember Him or speak anymore in His name," then in my heart it becomes like a burning fire shut up in my bones; and I am weary of holding it in, and I cannot endure it.

It's hard to imagine what these prophets of old were subjected to as they were faithful in presenting God's word to a people who did not want to hear it. No one could do this in their own strength, and we see that God's word was like a fire burning within. Like the disciples on the road after meeting the risen Lord who said "did not our hearts burn within us," like those who believed the angel and waited in the upper room until they received power from on high, we can wait upon the Lord for His Holy fire. John came baptizing with water, but Jesus came with the Holy Spirit and with fire!

Bring Your fire into our hearts, Lord Jesus, that we may be Your witnesses in this sin sick world.
