Among you as the one who serves.

Luke 22:24-27, A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

It’s rather amazing that this immediately follows the last supper, where Jesus announces that he will be betrayed to suffer on the cross by one of his own. We are so easily distracted by our own desires! He calls us to be leaders, not by might nor by power but by his Spirit; he “thought it not robbery” to shed his amazing glory, to be born an infant and to be our suffering servant. How could we change our world if we could have this same attitude, to server others even as he did in washing the feet, adopting the posture of the lowliest servant? Am I willing to serve as he did?

Show us opportunities to serve as you did, Lord.
