They became silent.
Luke 20:26, And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent.
The prevailing religious leaders recognized that Jesus parables were directed at them. They had the choice at that point to actually consider whether what he was saying was true in order to go a different way. Indeed they did go a different way, but only by sending spies to try to trap Jesus into saying something against the government so that they could arrest him! His wisdom is astonishing and irrefutable and produces what scripture tells that all will one day do in the presence of a Holy God. Are we willing to repent and go another way when we are convicted by the Holy Spirit?
Keep our ears open to you and your conviction and guidance that we may turn towards you, O Lord!
