Authority.
Romans 13:1, Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
We have the acorn from Jesus: “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” We hear much complaining in our own culture about certain politicians; yet in Paul’s view, living under a Caesar who proclaimed himself to be a god, governing authorities are established by God according to his purposes. His ways are higher than our ways, and beyond finding out. And we also know by the record of the Exodus that God hears and responds to complaining, perhaps in ways that we may not enjoy. The next time I’m considering complaining about politics with someone else, maybe I can remember to suggest that we spend the time more productively?
“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” Lord, teach us to pray first instead of complaining!
