God, who has mercy.
Romans 9:13-16, As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.
The question is not why should God hate Esau, but why should God love anyone? “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” If there is an injustice, it is that God should love anyone at all! Yet, “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in him should have everlasting life.” If our salvation depends in any way upon our own righteousness, we are lost. It depends upon God alone. Give thanks!
We are amazed at your great mercy, O Lord!
