“Is it I?”

Mark 14:18-19, And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?”

John tells us that Jesus was troubled in spirit when he spoke; eleven faces shocked and questioning, only one face masking the truth, eventually asking “Is it I?” while knowing the answer full well. His question left the group sorrowful and even questioning each other about who it might be. But they realized that they each needed to examine their own hearts, and ask the hard question “Is it I?” that they might check their own hearts. Eleven heart checks, yet there was one whose heart was set on betrayal.

Give us opportunities to examine our hearts, to take captive every thought and to walk every step in your light.
