They took offense at him.

Mark 6:1-3, He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.

Jesus had told his mother that his time had not yet come when he did his first miracle at the wedding feast in Cana. Here he is clearly recognized as an ordinary man, one who had no qualifications to do the things that he was doing in his own hometown. They knew him only as the son of a carpenter, and believed that he should never be anything else. They did not know him as the Son of Man, given the Spirit without measure, the one of whom the prophets spoke! He was not able to do any mighty works there because of their unbelief. Do we have the same problem today, thinking that we know him and restraining him by our unbelief?

Lord, we do believe; help our unbelief, that you may do all that you seek to do in our own time.
