They feared the multitude.

Mark 12:12, And they were seeking to seize Him; and yet they feared the multitude; for they understood that He spoke the parable against them. And so they left Him, and went away.

It's interesting that the religious leaders feared the multitudes more than they feared God. Jesus was not afraid to tell them the truth, because He was not afraid of what they might do, He trusted in the Father. Even though the way might be hard, even though there might be a cross at the end, we can always trust the Lord, with godly fear, rather than be afraid of what man might do to us. He calls to us "fear not," even when the world throws its most fearsome assault at us.

We seek You every day, knowing that Your mercies are new every morning, knowing that Your perfect love casts out fear.
