Take heart; it is I.
Mark 6:50b-52, But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.
Jesus sent the disciples on ahead, so that he could go up to the mountain and pray, the original intent of their journey. And even though his disciples had witnessed the most amazing miracle of feeding the multitude, we see that they did not understand because of their hardened hearts. They were exhausted by the storm and then terrified on first seeing him; he calmed their fears first by declaring his divine presence, “It is I” and then calmed the storm. In their astonishment is revealed their hardness of heart, in not understanding who he is through the miracle of the loaves. How much have we understood about who he is?
Heal us of any hardness of heart that we may take heart from you, and not be afraid!
