The poor among the saints.
Romans 15:25-27, At present, however, I am going to Jerusalem bringing aid to the saints. For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem. For they were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings.
The believers in Jerusalem were under some hard persecution for their faith, they needed help and the new Gentile believers put their faith to the test James gives us. When we see someone in need, we are to find ways to help them, not simply send them packing with our blessings. No doubt these believers in Jerusalem had been persecuted for their faith, perhaps losing jobs, homes and family connections. Jesus tells us that we must count the cost when we come to him, and most of us in the west don’t relate to what believers in other parts of the world face. Are we able to help those saints who are in need in his name today?
Open our eyes to the best way to help those who love you and are in need, O Lord.
