Unless.
John 6:52-53, The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.”
The people listening asked the obvious question, “How is this possible?” And instead of answering it, Jesus raised the bar: “unless” excludes any other possibility for the life He gives. We live in the age of tolerance, as one of my teachers says for any “ism, asm or spasm.” Jesus makes the claim exclusively: “I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me.” The world rails against this, tolerance abandoned, and making that claim put Jesus securely on the road to the cross.
Give us this day our daily bread, the bread of heaven that we may live!
