Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you...

Mark 5:11, Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The Beatitudes sound wonderful, although in a world without Christ and the cross, they also seem, and actually are, impossible. And then we get to the last two, that show us discipleship has a cost, that what we believe may not be well received by the world. Jesus has told us that we must take up our cross and follow him, and he also assures us that no matter what happens, he will be with us. Are we willing to follow him despite the cost?

We thank you that you have paid the price we could not pay, and that you promise us the power of your Holy Spirit to follow you.
