How will this be?

Luke 1:34-38, And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Mary received the startling news that she had found favor with God, and would bear his son with the faith to seek to know how this would happen since she was a virgin. Even though she doesn’t get a complete explanation, she accepts the amazing truth that she has somehow been chosen to bear the Son of God. She views her role as being the servant of the Lord, and she is willing to accept her role according to the word of the Lord. We can ask along with her, how can this be that the pre-existent Christ shed his glory to be born as an infant to dwell among us, word become flesh, fully deity, fully human yet without sin, having the Holy Spirit without measure? And how did he come to that garden, willingly giving his life to pay the penalty for sin? And how is it that he has given us the gift of faith, that we may look to him and be saved? And how is it that he fills and seals us with his Holy Spirit, that we may be his witnesses?

How indeed can it be that Jesus who had no sin became sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God; let our joy abound as did Mary’s to those who do not know you as we tell them of your amazing grace!
