“Or do you begrudge my generosity?”

Matthew 20:13-16, “But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ So the last will be first, and the first last.”

We have this amazing parable likening the kingdom of heaven to a farmer who pays the wages that he chooses to those he hires in a way that is seemingly upside down to this world. Those who were hired at the very last hour were paid first, and paid the same as those who worked all day. And in our natural minds, we take this to be unfair! He is able to do what makes no sense to this world, to be generous even to those of us who are undeserving. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Without the cross, we get what we deserve: death.

We thank you for the cross, that through it we are received by your amazing grace to eternal life!
