You are a mist.

James 4:13-15, Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”—  yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”

Our culture is built around the myth of the self-made person, the self-sufficient mountain man or cowboy. In fact, every breath is a gift of the common grace of God, even though we rarely think about that breath. We are given this life as a gift from God, and by His grace we are given the gift of forgiveness of sin through the cross and the good news of Jesus Christ. Are we faithful to do what He asks of us?

Give us the strength for this day to boldly proclaim Your name in thought, word and deed, O Lord!
