Because he did not give God the glory.
Acts 12:21-23, On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.
We think this would be really great, if those who fail to give glory to God would suddenly be consumed by worms. In our fallen minds, we could find several people a day that we could ask, as did Jesus disciples, if we should call for fire from heaven to come down and consume them! It’s very easy to overlook the fact that I may also be a daily candidate for this. Am I too much like one of the professional athletes, who frequently crosses himself and is seen in the next instant flipping off one of the opposing team who has given some offense? Unfortunately we all fail and fall short in giving glory to the one who is worthy of all honor, glory and power. How can I give him the glory today?
Thank you for your amazing grace that has not overlooked our sin but has taken it to the cross and dealt with it there forever and ever; may we go forth in the joy and power of your Holy Spirit to give you all the glory today!
