I myself will be surety for him.

Genesis 43:8-9, And Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, we as well as you and our little ones. I myself will be surety for him; you may hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame before you forever.”

Judah steps forward to do what no one else was willing to do; Reuben was willing to offer up his own sons as surety to his father, but Judah offers himself. We have a glimpse of what came later, as Jesus offered Himself up for all the sins of the world, not only willing, but able to bear the full weight of sin for the world for all time. And He who has begun a good work in us will be faithful to complete it as we invite Him to invade every area of our lives.

You are the One who baptizes us with the Holy Spirit and with fire! Come, Holy Spirit!
