Setting your mind on the things of God.
Mark 8:31-33, And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
Peter had just confessed that Jesus is the Messiah, the one of prophecy, the savior, the seed, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He had his own idea, as do many today, about what exactly that meant. Jesus came for the “joy set before him,” the cross-- his ultimate purpose to be the unblemished Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. We have a somewhat easier time of comprehending this from this side of the cross. It is wonderful that Peter was there and so clearly said what many of us would also express! How could it be that Jesus, the Christ, fully God incarnate as the second Adam came as the prophets said, a suffering servant, having no place to lay his head, scorned and despised by those most in need of his grace and mercy? What amazing grace indeed, that he should lay aside his glory and set his mind on the things of God that we might be rescued!
Thank you for laying aside your glory, for your perfect sacrifice to set us free forever; help us to set our mind on the things of God, not on the things of man!
