The promise of the Father.

Acts 1:4, And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Just before his ascension, Jesus gives his disciples explicit instructions, to stay in Jerusalem. Previously he told them to go to all the world; now he tells them to wait until they receive power “when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.” They had their own idea, that of seeing their nation restored; he has his own purpose, to empower them to become witness to his name! Peter confirms that this gift is given to all of us, for those who are near and those who are far off, “everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” Have we waited upon him for his power or are we launched off on our own course?

We wait upon You; empower us and lift our sails with the wind of your Holy Spirit, O Lord!
