The indictment which my adversary has written.
Job 31:29-37, “Have I rejoiced at the extinction of my enemy, or exulted when evil befell him? No, I have not allowed my mouth to sin by asking for his life in a curse. Have the men of my tent not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been satisfied with his meat’? The alien has not lodged outside, for I have opened my doors to the traveler. Have I covered my transgressions like Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom, because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, and kept silent and did not go out of doors? Oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature; let the Almighty answer me! And the indictment which my adversary has written, surely I would carry it on my shoulder; I would bind it to myself like a crown. I would declare to Him the number of my steps; like a prince I would approach Him.”
Job recognizes that he has an adversary. We do indeed have an adversary, an enemy of our soul who desires to consume us. No matter how we feel in the midst of trials we must never presume that God is our adversary; He is always for us. Jesus has sent us the ultimate advocate, His Holy Spirit. We have His word in scripture, which shows us that His promises that are “yes” and “Amen” fulfilled in Jesus Christ. We can put on the full armor of God and take up the sword of the Spirit, “which is the word of God.” He goes before us in battle, for “those who are with us are greater than those against us.” And we can boldly approach His throne of grace as Jesus goes before, for when He sees us He runs to meet us seeing us as His own!
We boldly come before Your throne of grace, that we might receive mercy; let Your Spirit flow as streams of living water to those whom we can touch today! “Faith is the victory that overcomes the world!”
