Cities of refuge.
Numbers 35:9-15, Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan, then you shall select for yourselves cities to be your cities of refuge, that the manslayer who has killed any person unintentionally may flee there. And the cities shall be to you as a refuge from the avenger, so that the manslayer may not die until he stands before the congregation for trial. And the cities which you are to give shall be your six cities of refuge. You shall give three cities across the Jordan and three cities in the land of Canaan; they are to be cities of refuge. These six cities shall be for refuge for the sons of Israel, and for the alien and for the sojourner among them; that anyone who kills a person unintentionally may flee there.’”
It’s amazing to see principles like this that have come down to us in our own laws, refuge, more than one witness and a fair hearing before the congregation. And the idea of refuge is made complete in Jesus; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. When we come to Him, and see our true need for Him we know that by faith we are saved through grace. And this wonderful gift that He freely offers to those who seek Him is the ultimate refuge for us all for all eternity.
We turn to You and accept Your cleansing by the blood of Your perfect sacrifice, where else can we go, Lord for “You have the words of eternal life!”
