More persuaded by the pilot and the captain of the ship.
Acts 27:9-11, And when considerable time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous, since even the fast was already over, Paul began to admonish them, and said to them, “Men, I perceive that the voyage will certainly be attended with damage and great loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.” But the centurion was more persuaded by the pilot and the captain of the ship, than by what was being said by Paul.
We give credence to those who have more knowledge, and so the centurion trusted in the advice of the experienced sailors and set forth on this journey that would end in disaster. It’s far to easy to discount a spiritual leader such as a pastor, as someone lacking experience in the real world. They’ve never held a “real job,” so says the wisdom of the world; and yet what we call reality will soon turn into eternity. Jesus called to Peter to cast down his nets after an unproductive night of fishing; Peter had enough faith, despite his real-world knowledge, to cast the nets close to shore and learned the power of God was enough to fill his nets to bursting!
Tune our ears to be guided by those leaders You have given us, and especially to listen today for the still, small voice of Your Holy Spirit leading, guiding and inspiring us in Your ways of wisdom.
