Because he had acted shrewdly.

Luke 16:8-9, “And his master praised the unrighteous steward because he had acted shrewdly; for the sons of this age are more shrewd in relation to their own kind than the sons of light. And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of the mammon of unrighteousness; that when it fails, they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.”

This parable puts some people over the edge! The best view of it is to recognize that all that we have in this life comes from Him, and that we should make the best use of it to bring eternal results. Especially in our country, He has given us enormous blessings that go far beyond the need for our daily bread; are we as clever in using what He gives us as this unrighteous steward of the parable?
