A complaint arose.
Acts 6:1, NOW at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food.
Imagine that. The nascent church is beset by complaints and racism! It’s easy to think of churches as some perfect place where everyone there has a little halo. In truth, we find our limits being stretched, for the church is made up of those of us who are flawed. One of the criticisms of the church is that it is filled with hypocrites; one of my former teachers remarked, “Where else would they go?” We who are deeply flawed can still be used by Him in His amazing work through the church. We need to do what the early believers did in seeking His wisdom in how to correct our failings and proceed in love.
Help us to love each other as You have loved us; to be perfect even as You are perfect!
