But you shall receive power.

Acts 1:8, “… but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

We like to focus on the “receive power” that Jesus promised His disciples as His promise right before ascending into Heaven. Perhaps we should also consider the previous verse where we see that the Father is in control of all the timing and He is the one with all authority. Obviously there was also a purpose for this power, that these uneducated men would be His witnesses. Perhaps also we should consider verse 4, for Jesus told them to “wait for what the Father had promised.” Too many times we launch out into “doing” before we are “being.” Finally, we see that they were all of “one mind,” and “continually devoting themselves to prayer,” along with the women and other believers. He is ready to use us; are we ready to follow Him?

Help me to follow You today, to prayerfully wait upon Your power to do what You call me to do, Lord Jesus!
