Were not our hearts burning within us?

Luke 24:30-32, And it came about that when He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight. And they said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?”

My first thought when I read this account of the road to Emmaus is how wonderful it would have been to hear Him explain Himself from the scripture, beginning with “Moses and with all the prophets.” And then I am reminded of the promise we are given through Jeremiah, refreshed in Hebrews, of the new and better covenant, of His promise to put His laws into our minds and hearts. He has given us His Holy Spirit, sealing us and teaching us and He is always ready to explain Himself from scripture if only we will ask!

Open my eyes, ears, mind and my heart to receive all that You have, from the opening of scripture to the breaking of the bread, Lord Jesus.
